With this weekend’s San Diego Comic Con
seeing the launch of not one, not two, but 11 new Marvel projects in the next
two years, there’s never been a better time to be a fan of the franchise.
And one superfan who couldn’t be more excited about the
announcements was Scarlett Johannson, who sung the praises of new cast member
Angelia Jolie as she said it was ‘about time’ more women starred in the
superhero franchise.
Speaking to E! News following the weekend’s convention, Scarlett
couldn’t contain her excitement about Angelina joining Marvel Phase 4.
‘It’s bananas,’ she said, ‘I mean, there’s a lot of women that I
hugely admire: Angelina, Salma [Hayek], Rachel [Weisz], Tessa [Thompson],
Natalie [Portman].
I think it’s very exciting.’ With films such as The Eternals,
starring Angelina alongside Richard Madden, Bryan Tyree Henry and Salma Hayek,
and a female Thor film in the pipeline, Scarlett was thrilled to see the superhero
franchise prioritise representation.
‘It’s very exciting to see
such a diverse group of people,’ Scarlett said. ‘I think it grounds the
presence of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) in a way. It’s awesome. And
it’s about time.’
One of the biggest announcements in Marvel’s Phase 4 was the news
that Scarlett, 38, would be reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff in a
standalone Black Widow movie.
Speaking of the spin-off, which will follow on from the events of
Avengers: Endgame and also stars Rachel Weisz, Scarlett relished the opportunity
to show the character’s depth in her own story.
‘I get to play Natasha as a fully realised woman and in all of her
many facets,’ she said. ‘I’m excited for fans to see the flawed side of her,
what she perceives to be the flawed side of her, and I’m looking to wipe out
some of that red in my ledger so you guys will be seeing more of that.’
