Woman dies after being found on fire in back garden in east London


A woman has died after she was found on fire in a garden in London last night.

Fire crews and police were called to Lee Avenue, Chadwell Heath, near Romford, shortly before midnight and found the woman on fire.


The unnamed woman was declared dead at the scene and an investigation has been launched. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: ‘A woman, aged in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are working to inform next of kin. ‘The death is currently being treated as unexplained. Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing and officers remain at the scene.’ Firefighters arrived at the house first and they alerted the police.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: ‘Two fire engines and around ten firefighters were called to reports of a person alight in the rear garden of a house on Lee Avenue in Chadwell Heath yesterday evening. ‘Sadly a woman was confirmed dead at the scene.

‘The Brigade was called at 23:52 on Thursday evening and the incident was over for firefighters at 00:28. Crews from Dagenham fire station attended the scene. ‘

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police and the Brigade’s fire investigation team.’
