A boy who
was attacked at school has died as a result of horrific injuries he sustained
in the beating.
He was
punched in the face by one boy then in the side of the head by another, causing
him to fall backwards and hit his head on a concrete pillar.
Police
revealed that he died yesterday despite ‘rigorous medical intervention and treatment
efforts at an area hospital’.
He was
attacked at lunchtime on September 16 and was taken to hospital in a critical
condition.
Classmates
revealed that Diego had previously been bullied at school and online.
Crystal
Rodriguez said: ‘It’s really tough because there’s so many fights here, and
they don’t do anything about it.
The
security’s all over the school, but they take forever to come.’ Diego’s assault
caused outrage among parents over the school’s handling of bullying.
His alleged
attackers, both 13-year-old boys, were arrested and are currently in custody
awaiting prosecution.
The school
said they were both honors students, meaning they should be setting a good
example to other children.
The school
district has hired behaviour and mental health experts and crisis counsellors
are available for students and staff following Diego’s death.
